Stella Alekou was appointed Assistant Professor of Latin Literature at the Department of Philology (University of Ioannina) in January 2022 and is the Erasmus+ Departmental Coordinator of the Department of Philology. She studied Classics in Cyprus (University of Cyprus, BA in Classical Studies), Scotland (University of Glasgow, MPhil in Classics) and France (Paris IV-Sorbonne, PhD in Latin Studies, awarded with summa cum laude). She received an A.G. Leventis Foundation Ph.D. Award (2008-2009) for the completion of her PhD. She speaks English (Proficient User), French (Proficient User), Spanish (Independent User), and Italian (Basic User).

She worked as a Research Fellow at the Open University of Cyprus (Studies in Hellenic Culture, 2019-2021), the University of the West of England (Faculty of Law, LLM, Alexander College, 2015-2019), and the University of Central Lancashire–CY (Department of Law, 2012-2015). She also worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in two research projects on the reception of Greco-Roman literature: 1. Excellence Hubs, RESTART 2016-2020, University of Cyprus (Department of Classics and Philosophy, “The reception of Ancient Cyprus in the culture of the Western world”, and, 2. A.G. Leventis Foundation, 2014-2016, University of Cyprus, Department of French and European Studies, “Concepts and functions of European Philhellenism in the era of the Restoration”.

She participated in more that 30 International Conferences and Workshops as an Invited Speaker and co-organised four: 1. “Audience Response in Ancient Greek and Latin Literature”, Member of the Organising Committee, 1st IconiC, University of Ioannina, 2-3 September 2022; 2. «Κυπριακοί μύθοι στο 10ο βιβλίο των Μεταμορφώσεων του Οβιδίου και στη μεταγενέστερη γραμματεία». She is co-editor (with Martin Vöhler and Miltos Pechlivanos) of Concepts and Functions of Philhellenism. Aspects of a Transcultural Movement, De Gruyter, 2021, as well as co-editor (with Spyridon Tzounakas and Stephen Harrison) of The Reception of Ancient Cyprus in Western Culture, De Gruyter, 2023. She is also the author of Médée et la rhétorique de la mémoire au féminin (Ovide, «Héroïde» XII), L’Harmattan, 2018. She published more 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals, principally in English, but also in French and Greek. Her research focuses on law and gender in Ovidian poetry and the reception of Ovidian poetry in English literature and performance (20th and 21st century). She is a member of “Les Études classiques” Editorial Board and Series Co-editor of IconiC, Brepols.
